The Icon Critical Guides: Mark Twain: Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn is one of the best over-views of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Hutchinson, the editor, has made brief one or two page selections, at most, of a wide selection of critical opinion and ordered it so that it makes sense both historically and in the development of critical thought. Between the excerpts is Hutchinson's running narrative that puts each selection in context while thoughtfully questioning the excerpt's assumptions and conclusions. Many of his comments are quite astute. Without a doubt, Hutchinson's guide is one of the better and most informative books on Tom and Huck.
