This book is a classic in the horror tradition, and it's not hard to see how Stephen King became the master of horror. This book starts with a troubled family desperately trying to heal and pull itself back together, but then ended up in a haunted hotel determined to tear them apart. One of the genius things about King is how his tales take the most ordinary of people into extraordinary situations, forcing them to go to their limits to try to survive them. The Shining might be one of his best books. One flaw of King's that I've noticed in reading his vast body of work is that he has a problem with sticking his endings. He'll build up the story well, keep the momentum going, but then just kind of fizzle when it comes to the pay-off. The Shining, however, is one of the few tales I've read where he stuck the ending. The tension, suspense, and momentum of the story get a really good pay-off. One of his best, and for fans of horror stories. Do not miss.
