Aweee this book was so good. From the beginning to the end I was in love. The main character is Princess Mayavati (or Maya), who is said to be cursed with a horoscope that promises a marriage of death and destruction. Maya is all alone in the castle, she spies on her father and reads. Until her independence is destroyed when her father arranges a party to pick a husband for Maya. But the party does not go as planned… "A soldier's hand grasped for me, but Amar pulled me away. Arrows zoomed past, but each time one came near, he would whirl me out of the way. He moved fluidly, dodging javelins, always a few steps behind me, a living shield." Against all odds, Maya finds love with her new husband, Amar. And let me just say that her husband is so so sweet. "What do you want from me? He stopped, the smile was gone from his lips. "I want your perspective and honesty," he said, before adding in a softer voice, "I want to be humbled by you. My kingdom needs a queen. It needs someone with fury in her heart and shadows in her smile. It needs someone restless and clever. It needs you.” COME ON THAT IS SO CUTE!! 5 stars for sure. Thank you Roshani Chokshi for blessing this dream book. - @bibliophile of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library I didn't really know how much I would enjoy this book when I first picked it up. Filled with exquisite details on Indian mythology, it resembles almost a mix of Beauty and the Beast and the story of Persephone and Hades. Maya, the protagonist, is uniquely her own character. She is strong in ways that are not "brash and violent," but is written about in an assertive manner. Doubt and emotions play big parts as secrets and conspiracies are unveiled, each corner at a time. It isn't every day one stumbles upon a good story with actual backgrounds set in mythology. Full star rating! - @Siri of the Teen Review Board of the Hamilton Public Library
