Rainbow Rowell is magic. I liked Eleanor & Park, but it was too grim for me to _enjoy_ as such (gripping, yes; fun, no). But Fangirl left me with a big smile on my face (after staying up way too late to keep reading because I just had to find out what happens). The author really showed great skill with Fangirl, because she has taken a bunch of classic coming-of-age tropes - leaving home, starting college, learning independence, first love etc - and turned them into a fresh and likeable story. Her Simon Snow metafiction is a brilliant tribute to Harry Potter but is also funny and exciting in its own right. My only complaints are that Cath seemed too neurotic at the beginning of the story, and that I would have liked more character development in Wren, who is Cath's twin. Overall, 4.5 stars. Now I have to read Carry On!
