This is a book that has shaken me and will not quite let me go. I had wanted to read it for awhile, I was aware of it's status as a classic, but I never got around to reading the whole thing. What I have found is a deeply poetic, profoundly disturbing piece of art. Most of the time when people talk on things that were banned sixty, fifty, forty years ago, I figure they are pretty tame by today's standards. Lolita is a different animal. It's still pretty shocking, its subject matter still controversial. The book tests your limits of empathy. The protagonist is a monster who doesn't quite grasp how monstrous he really behaves and the entire narrative asks you to view the world through his very specific set of eyes. It's a curious, chilling, beautiful book. Read it.
