Somehow I never got around to seeing this until now! I found the story a little hard to get into at first but then once we hit a pivotal plot point it all started coming together, as you see how the different story lines interweave. Emma Thompson and Helena Bonham Carter shine as a pair of upper-class sisters (reminding me rather of Elinor and Marianne from "Sense and Sensibility"), who get caught up in the lives of both a very wealthy family and an extremely poor couple. As the elder sister's fortunes change for the better as she marries into that family, the younger sister gets caught up in the miseries of the other couple and her growing insistence regarding who is truly to blame for their troubles. Lovely to look at as are all Merchant/Ivory productions and well-acted by all, including Anthony Hopkins, Vanessa Redgrave, and Prunella Scales.
