This novel by Picoult, provided us with a great amount of insight as to how the whole family can be affected by one child being diagnosed with a severe illness. The older son was emotionally neglected, and even the parents had become emotionally apart. Anna was conceived initially for the use of her umbilical cord for her older sister. As the years passed by, Anna was subjected to numerous painful medical procedures to help her sister. Now, Anna was being asked to donate a kidney; which her older sister did not want her to do. At the age of 13, Anna hires a lawyer in order to be medically emancipated from her parents. Her case is won in court and her lawyer becomes her guardian. The finality of the court case appears to unite the family. Yet, Picoult chooses to let Anna die, in order for her sister to have the kidney transplant. As a reader, I found the ending quite unbelievable!
