What a wonderful collection of stories!
I had never read any of Richler's work before and came to it with the general impression that it would be too specific to the Jewish community of Montreal to hold my interest. But the stories are of interest to everyone. While they are rich in detail of 1940s Montreal and told, for the most part, from the perspective of a youth, Richler's themes of family and community, religion, conflict, disappointment, and loneliness are ones that everyone will relate to.
I highly recommend this collection. He's one of our best.
