It's a great film with a not so great story that fails to communicate effectively what the point of the movie is. That said, the themes and symbolism are very much there and if you're into mythology or folk tales you'll like this one.

If The Lighthouse is a send-up of Victorian era horror … fine. If The Lighthouse is a visual transcript of a nightmare arising from magic mushroom indigestion … fine. However, if this film ostensibly embodies, to critical acclaim, edgy metaphysical art, then we have nothing more than concocted flim-flam foisted on a credulous audience.

Film tres noir, and if you favour that genre, this film is five star, if not, then pass. Cinematography is awesome, casting, performances amazing but not everyone’s cup of, well, what’s is it that they’re drinking anyhow? Moonshine?

love love love love loved this movie. So great on every level. From the acting, to the writing, to the old timey aspect ration, to the soundtrack. There was madness, there was crazy visuals. This movie has everything for the lover of weird movies.

2020. I found this movie quite slow & plodding about two light house keepers on an island in about 1890's as they sink into depression with strange circumstances. Just "OK."

Oh boy, this was a weird one. But beautifully shot, suitably tense and creepy, fairly historically accurate with it's costumes and dialogue, and with two big performances from it's leads. Definitely worth a watch.

The B/W photography was intended to give the film the right mood and style befitting a horror (or semi-horror) drama, and to some degree it works. However, this is basically a 2-person film, and after a while I got tired of listening to them talking old, old English (hint: ye instead of you). At the end, I was still not sure if something supernatural did happen or these men just lost their mind through isolation, boozing up, or hallucination. Not a great watch for me.

As reviewers already posted, this movie is not for everyone, but it is brilliant in many ways.
Very atmospheric, the director has a gift to bring the viewer into the movie.
The acting is terrific, Dafoe is a master.
But it's important to give due credit to Robert Pattinson. This is the third movie that I watch with Pattinson that I really, really like. The first one was "Good Time" (2017), then "High Life" (2018), and now "The Lighthouse". I cannot believe I am saying this, but I can't wait to see his next performance.
The extra material in the DVD is interesting, I definitely can see the Edgar Allan Poe influence in the whole project.
This movie will become a classic. I just hope not a "horror classic" because there is more to it than just horror.

This is possibly one of the best films I've ever seen. I rarely leave reviews, but this one merits it. Beautifully shot in black and white, in a 4:3 ratio that intentionally hearkens back to silent horror (paired gorgeously with a Bernard Hermann-esque soundtrack that rumbles and groans in the background). Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson are an unlikely pairing for a movie so narrowly focused on the deterioration of the relationship between two men, but both of them completely own the screen and your attention, delivering performances that are equally strong in radically different ways. Is this movie bizarre and disturbing? Yes, absolutely -- but this is by design. The further the characters slip into their madness, the less the audience can follow the timeline and motivations of either man, and by the catastrophic and explosive ending, you're left shaken to your core. I could not stop talking about this movie for a month, and even now, I'm excited just writing this review. If your interest is even mildly piqued by what you've heard or read about this movie, please do yourself and watch it with your undivided attention.

A lighthouse horror tale indeed, with a wide array of macabre events!
