As soon as Adam Kay set foot on a hospital ward for the first time, he realized there's quite a lot they don't teach you at medical school . . . His diaries from the NHS front line - scribbled in secret after long nights, endless days and missed weekends - are hilarious, horrifying and heartbreaking by turns. This is going to hurt is everything you wanted to know about being a junior doctor, and more than a few things you really didn't. And yes, it may leave a scar.

Not for the prude or squeamish.
Book is engrossing, witty, occasionally poignant and gives the best argument against home births anywhere (no proximity to lifesaving equipment). Adams ends by explaining what motivated him to stay with it as long as he did – and why he quit the profession.

As a nurse and midwife I’ve worked in a British hospital and I’ve always enjoyed the Brits sense of humour. I really enjoyed this humorous but thoughtful book. I don’t think you need to be a healthcare worker but it probably helps. I think in Canada intern/resident hours of work are now more regulated than when this book takes place (2004-2010).

Excellent book. Laugh-out-loud funny constantly. Had difficulty not annoying my companion because I found so many funny stories and word plays in it that I read practically the entire book out loud. If you like graphic medical details and wry humor, this is for you.

If you're a fan of medical stories with touches of comedy (e.g. A Thousand Naked Strangers), you'll definitely enjoy this. Keep in mind that it is quite English, so you may miss some of the references. Told as a series of journal entries, I came for the anecdotes, enjoyed the laughs, but stayed for the jaw dropping experience of the underappreciated men and women employed by the NHS.
