OMG, the most depressing novel I have ever read. Nothing but crime, mutilation, depression and death. I am so glad I did not live in late 18th century Stockholm.
Memorable characters, stylish prose, a vivid historical setting, and a grisly crime not for the faint of heart. Grimly compelling and morally complex.
I can't remember the last time I became so completely immersed in a book. This is an atmospheric & beautifully written historical crime novel set in 18th century Stockholm centring around 4 main characters. The setting is so well rendered that it is a difficult read in places but so worth your time. I read about 100 books a year & I have no doubt this will make my top ten list.
I found The Burning Chambers by Kate Mosse or Martyr by Rory Clements to be grittier and far more engrossing. This plodded and was dull.
