A quintessential Guillermo del Toro film filled with rich but subdued cinematography and complex characters. Although the creature looks unbelievably human (for empathetic purposes?) the inability to relate to the "Otherness" is a significantly deeper issue, especially with the way huma... Read More »

It reminded me of Dr. Strangelove. It is at least partially a comedy and a statement about the strange decade that was the 1960's.

Different. Weird. ... I think it won awards for the same reasons why I can't find the right words to describe this story to form an opinion.

it wasn't a horrible movie. A couple of friends that had seen it, told me that they thought I would like it. It is quirky and clever but somehow either too silly or too serious.

Tarzan finds a bubble bath. Without excessive vocalizations. Needs to be about an hour longer. Not to explain comic books, or argue that a woman should respect her husband for everyone's sake, rather to allow us all to luxuriate as a female shares water with a "creature". Many 1960's references to bring smiles to those alive then.

I’m not a big Guillermo del Toro fan. Maybe I’m just to shallow, but it’s a struggle for me to watch his films. Maybe I don’t like fantasy films. I really like several of the actors, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer. But they didn’t bring any sense into the equation except for stock performances.

I give ths movie 2 and a half stars. Although i found plot to b very unique at the first 30 minutes even interesting, it started to fade. The sets and costumes for the era were refreshing and a nice change from modern movie genres. But all and all at end of it i felt alil cheated, i wanted to feel more connection with the characters and it was lacking. Ths movie felt alil rushed and was alil all over the place. Its a good feel movie tht just needed alil more excitement to it. And didn't like ending

I give this movie one solid star because, for the first 15-20 minutes, I was interested. However, sometime around that 15-20 minute mark, I lost interest. The rest of the film did not hold me enough to care.

I was so excited for this B-movie style take on BEAUTY AND THE BEAST meets CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. The beautiful production and talented cast had me even more excited. Unfortunately, belabored pacing, a horribly cartoonish villain, and heavy-handed satire weigh down a story that demands a far more delicate touch. The love story was rushed as well. Considering his excellent work on PAN'S LABYRINTH, which juggled socio-political commentary and fairy tale conventions with far more skill, I expected more from Guillermo del Toro.

Any movie with Sally Hawkins is worth watching. But The Shape of Water was a disappointment considering Hawkins and Del Torro. It was too predictable and seemed to be a product of focus groups.

A beautiful journey with love, humor, and friendship. I loved this more than I expected. Usually I find Guillermo Del Toro movies as dark, emotional pieces I can only watch once, but this one was definitely a movie I'd like to watch again. I don't usually like romantic movies, but this was a great blend of fantasy and suspense.

54 quotes in IMDb already (thanks to the contributors.) However, some of the best quotes are silent signs. You just have to watch them, like this one:

Zelda: [Elisa looks noticeably happier] Why you smilin', hon? Well stop lookin' like that. What happened?

[Elisa shakes her head to say "nothing"]

Zelda: Why? How? How? Does he - have a...?

[Elisa nods and uses her hands to describe what the Amphibian Man's penis looks like]

Zelda: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

[pause]

Zelda: Lor'...! Never trust a man. Even when he looks flat down there.

[laughs]

"Decent?

"A man has the decency not to fuck up. Now that's one thing, that's real decent of him.

"But the other kind of decency, it doesn't really matter. We sell it, but it's an export. We sell it because we don't use it."

-Character of General Hoyt
