Steampunk that actually considers the sociopolitical effects of colonialism? AMAZE. A great example of balancing suspense with solid writing, this page-turner explores the intersections of race, sex, and class through the eyes of a WOC protagonist, and works well as a standalone -- though I look forward to Ang's next case!
Great mystery in a fascinating steampunk setting. This fantasy world is inspired by South Africa, and captures its history and complex cultures. If you're looking for a smart, thoughtful fantasy with a solid mystery and a capable lead, look no further.
Wordy and long made an interesting tale tedious. So much extra information made the mystery get lost. For example there's a baby born and the main girl decides to care for it herself. It cluttered up the suspense. Very obvious bad guys made for little surprises. Immersive world with culture of black, white and native clashing. I also thought it strange that for such a strong female lead she was constantly swooning over the men in her life. I could understand her hesitation when it came to social status but it seemed out of character to get tongue tied with boys.
