Gary is a racing pigeon. He dreams of adventure and keeps a scrapbook of far-off places. But Gary has never been to these places. Because unlike other racing pigeons, Gary can't fly. When Gary falls into the pigeons' travel basket and winds up in the city, he's suddenly lost and all alone. The city is a big place, but it's a great place for a big adventure.

Gary is mostly like the other pigeons. He sleeps in the same place, eats the same food, and enjoys adventure like the others. However Gary doesn't fly. His adventure happens by accident when he (and his scrapbook) fall into the basket the other 'racing pigeons' use to travel.

In theory this is a cute story of a bird who is different but still finds a way to have adventures. But there is a lack of depth that as an adult and critical thinking I found bothersome. Why doesn't Gary fly? Does he not know how? Do the pigeons race each other home, and if so why? Why would the human who races pigeons keep a flightless bird?

I read this to a small group of preschoolers, and they were not hooked into the story. Instead "we" read the text, then searched the pages for where Gary was. It was more of a Where's Waldo than a story they wanted to know the ending of. It is a nice filler book, but not one I would particularly recommend.
