I loved how the author connected the first book to the second book with Earth's interference. It was a beautiful novel and I would definitely recommend reading this. I just LOVE the character of Beckett.

I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel to The Forgetting. It's set several hundred years later, so there is no character overlap, and you probably could read this book and enjoy it just fine without reading the first one. But it wouldn't be the same. Not because of the one or two tangential references to characters in the first book but because history affects how society develops - and that's as true for this society as it is for ours.

I've noticed that a lot of the negative reviews on Goodreads focus on the pace. These books are not fast-paced, action packed and full of fight scenes. They take their time building a world and a small number of characters in that world. There is a romance, but it's not the point of the book (just as it wasn't the point of the first book). These are books about human nature. And about a society. And about certain aspects of society that seem almost inescapable.

As in my comments about the first book, I'm avoiding discussion of specific plot details. These are the sort of books you really ought to read unspoiled. I am likely to read them again some day to see how different the experience is knowing what's coming. I suspect I will still enjoy them. But I am glad that the first read was unspoiled.

Highly recommend. But read The Forgetting first if you can.
