The sequel to Wicked returns to the land of Oz to tell the story of Liir, an adolescent boy last seen hiding in the shadows of the castle after Dorothy did in Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. Bruised, comatose, and left for dead in a gully, Liir is shattered in spirit as well as in form. But he is tended at the Cloister of Saint Glinda by the silent novice called Candle, who wills him back to life with her musical gifts. What dark force left Liir in this condition? Is he really Elphaba's son? He has her broom and her cape, but what of her powers? Can he find his supposed half-sister, Nor, last seen in the forbidding prison, Southstairs? Can he fulfill the last wishes of a dying princess? In an Oz that, since the Wizard's departure, is under new and dangerous management, can Liir keep his head down long enough to grow up?

This book was a beautiful followup to Wicked, the first third was especially exciting. However, I could have done without most of "The Service" chapters/years, I get that they were there to flesh out Liir's transformation but literally. nothing. happened. I almost gave up on the book entirely. I think more work could have gone into the events of the ending instead, which was unbelievably epic. This one also seemed a tad bit more wordy than the previous one, which was also wordy but more in a poetic way whereas this came off as pretentious in parts. All in all though a fitting and excellent tribute to the life of Elphaba, Liir truly is his mother's son, too kind for this world and misunderstood beyond reason (but mostly only by himself haha). Looking forward to A Lion Among Men!

Son of a Witch is the second novel in the Wicked Years trilogy (trilogy? series? I don't know yet). I liked Wicked well enough, but I felt that Son of a Witch was even better.

It tells the story of Liir, who is rather forgettable in the first novel, and the ups and downs of his coming of age. I won't lie- there are times in this book that I was yelling at him. And fewer times that I was cheering for him. But it all worked out in the end, which made me want to dive right into the third novel (A Lion Among Men) right away.

I love the continuing political commentary, this time on a more personal level regarding compliance vs subservience, piety as political tool, and the nature of truth. I definitely recommend this for anyone who read Wicked, whether they liked it or not. But you can also read it as a stand-alone without losing anything in the plot.

These books are difficult to follow sometimes but the author does tell a good story. I was interested in "the other stories" or the different point of view from the beloved Wizard of Oz, this book does not disappoint.

This book was excellent! Thought it was even better than Wicked!

I enjoyed Wicked, but the sequel was just painful to finish. The main character, Liir, is unlikable and never seems to develop at all.

This sequel to Wicked was every bit as good as the first book. I enjoyed escaping to Oz -- albeit a very different Oz than Judy Garland's! - this summer.

Is Liir the son of the withc? Will the scarecrow rule OZ?

This book was pretty good but it started off a little slow. The last 100 pages got good though and I'm looking forward to reading the next one.

While Maguire is one of my favorite authors, Son of a Witch was not his best work. This sequel to Wicked leaves something to be desired.
