I would have enjoyed this movie more if it had English subtitles as i found it difficult to understand the accents. In the assassination attempts of Nazis, it seems the people involved had some physical problems. In this movie it seems one of main participants has some difficulty with stress/shooting his enemies. Stauffenberg lacked the fingers to pull the bomb triggers, but that is another movie. This movie certainly portrays the strength of the Nazis, but then the comment appears on the screen - it the Nazis 6 hours to shoot the men who had sought refuge in the church. It appeared that were 4-5 of the assassins shooting against a whole regimen of Nazi soldiers. It just seemed unreal.

My original post about this film has disappeared. Could it be...a conspiracy? ;) Anthropoid tells the great patriotic story of Czechoslovakia, a country that pre-war England and France was happy to feed to the German wolves. And yet they were able to do what no nation or group, however large or powerful seemed able to do: find a high-ranking Nazi and shoot him through the head. And this Nazi was among the worst of the worst: Reinhard Heydrich, one of the architects of the Holocaust, whom even Hitler called "the man with the iron heart". They paid a terrible price for it, but these partisans deserve to stand tall among all people who have resisted evil. The lead characters are not played by Czechoslovak actors, with mixed results: Cillian Murphy is wonderful, Jamie Dornan is Jamie Dornan -- but the story is compelling enough to smooth out any rough spots. Anthropoid's final shoot-out is one of the best on film.

Credible acting portraying characters based upon real events. I had never heard of this event or the assassination attempt on SS General Reinhard Heydrich, and found this film to be methodical and tense. Captures the dramatic desperation that the Czechoslovakian resistance felt under Nazi Germany during occupation starting in 1938.
Major parts played well by Cillian Murphy (Free Fire: 2016, Peaky Blinders: tv: 2013 - 2017), Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey series: 2015, 2017 & 2018), and many of the supporting actors/actresses.
Like the 2008 Valkyrie film, depicting the assassination attempt on Hitler, this film spends more time on the preparation and post cost, than any on screen shooting.
There is on screen type introducing the factual events and following the film as well. There is no extras on the DVD.

I rated this movie and am commenting on it after having just seen a newer feature film version of the same event on Netflix, Killing Heydrich. Anthropoid suffers badly by comparison. Not sure I would have given it any more than 2.5 stars in any case, but certainly not having seen the newer version.

Anthropoid's point of view is entirely that of the Czech resistance and the two would-be assassins parachuted into their native country after training in Scotland. So, their target is nothing more than a man in uniform riding in a car. We do NOT see the assassins commando training, here. We do NOT see them parachute in, and the manhunt that immediately occurs after their landing (and subsequent struggle through knee-deep snow.). We see all that and much more in the newer version.

Here's the biggest, most compelling difference: in Killing Heydrich, the resistance assassins don't even make an appearance until almost halfway through the film! The first part of the movie offers a chilling portrait of the man they're tasked with killing (oh, and his wife, too!), and offers a very powerful cinematic rationale for why he HAD to die--regardless of the consequences.

In summary: Anthropoid: OK. Killing Heydrich: Fabulous.

This is a good story, well worth telling.

The movie is a good adaptation of the real story. It kept my attention to the events. The romantic parts felt as if they were "fillers", not much time left for them. The movie shows the psychological aspect of behaviour, not just thoughtless heroism. It also invites a good discussion about the choices presented in historical situations. There is always a price to pay.

A missed opportunity. The 1942 plan to assassinate Heydrich raised (and continues to raise) the moral question of whether a spectacular act of resistance (albeit one with little military significance) is justified when it is sure to lead to terrible 'collateral damage' in the form of German reprisals against the innocent civilian population of Prague. The issue is touched on briefly at the start but is never developed. Instead the film focuses on the heroism of the Czech assassination team during their last stand in a Prague church, where they manage to kill half of the Wehrmacht in a long and conventional Hollywood shootout. Too bad.

Depressing! The Nazi's were so evil they made taking cyanide look like the attractive option.

Violence: Some disturbing violent content.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: Explosions, shootings, stabbings, and suicides are depicted. Not suitable for kids.

Violence: It's a movie set in World War II about an assassination and events surrounding it. Yup, it's violent from time to time but it's not a gore fest, either.

You know what we have sacrificed for the cause here?
-What you have sacrificed? What has Czechoslovakia sacrificed?
You have no idea what we've sacrificed!

So this is about the Czech government in London trying to impress the allies? It was the allies that gave us to the Germans in the first place.

The point of the mission is to succeed. Yes? I'm more worried that we haven't planned what to do if we are successful. What happens afterwards is not important.

So you think we are just two little girls who are here to follow the important parachutists around?... We've been resisting here from the beginning in our own way. I personally don't have any reservation to killing a Nazi pig. But don't treat us like what you are about to do doesn't affect us. It does and it will.

Yesterday, the Germans went to a village, Lidice, and shot every man over the age of 16. The women and children have been taken to camps, and the buildings were razed to the ground.

You're going to murder Heydrich?
