Goofy and campy, this movie was made for anyone who loves cheesy fun! It's the type of film that takes the time to introduce its characters with a name placard and a wink. There's a beautiful and rather steampunk vibe to the sets and costuming, but mainly it's all about how cray cray James McAvoy's Doctor F. is while he and Daniel Radcliffe's Igor get drunk and make monsters together. (And bromance magic.)

I feel like this movie hedged most of its bets on James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe. Without their names, it feels like a pretty boring story about some characters most of us didn't really think about. It just barely works as a prequal to Frankenstein, but these two actors have done far better in other films.

3/5

I like how they approached this film because, after all, everything has to be financed somehow. the title character's vehemence toward God is very apparent and eye-opening. also, that he puts himself in the place of God.

A novel take on Igor's role.
James McAvoy's portrayal of Victor as confident genius was good until his slide into self-aggrandizing mania sort of went off the rails and fizzled.
Regrettably, Daniel Radcliffe just doesn't have much screen charisma since he graduated from Harry Potter. Perhaps his frightened-rabbit eyes limits his range. Dare I mention his height?
Lastly, the emphasis here is on the creator, so the monster is disappointingly only a nonentity footnote.

This movie is amazing! All in all a different take on the legend of Frankenstein but both great performances by Daniel Radcliffe and Mcavoy

not really about monster....so once you shake your idea that its about shelley story, it becomes a fascinating movie. The cinematography, costuming, and acting are all captivating. And the line "this is not what Life is at all" was like a shot to my heart.

Igor's perspective and role in this movie was surprising. He is depicted as an intellectual equal to Dr. Frankenstein, as opposed to an assistant constantly saying, "Yes, Master," and following all of Frankenstein's commands.

Seeing Daniel Radcliff as a hunchback clown was incredibly bizarre. It's a sad attempt of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Not worth it.

(BY THE WAY HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET, BUT...)
sounds like a good movie in its own right but not a worthy adaptation of a classic romantic novel; i read it in my first year english class at Mac this past term and loved it
If filmmakers want to mutate classics, they should give them completely different titles.

Regardless of weaknesses mentioned already, if you are a fan of Harry Potter, Downton Abbey and Sherlock you'll be delighted by the casting here. In addition to Harry, Sybil and Moriarty, you'll have to pay attention to catch Molly and a host of other familiar characters. James McAvoy, always entertaining, occasionally seems to channel Sherlock and Professor Snape. Good fun.

Igor: You know this story. The crack if lightning. A mad genius. An unholy creation. The world, of course, remembers the monster, not the man. But sometimes, when you look closely, there's more to a tale. Sometimes the monster is the man.
