I don't usually read historical fiction. I read this book because of its exploration of memory. In the end, the entries from the mother's journal were actually my least favorite part. The "present day (to the story)" relationships among the characters were what kept me reading through to the end. If you like historical fiction you'll probably enjoy this book even more than I did.
