About the Argentine film: its really excellent if you like to find out about other systems of justice mixed with an intriguing story and excellent acting; slow paced for sure but ultimately very satisfying. As to the American remake: its another disastrous career choice for Nicole Kidman who makes nothing but bad films.

Starts strong. The story is about a rape/murder that intersects with an inter-agency task force investigation post-9/11 of a mosque in LA where a sleeper cell is thought to be operating. The cast is A-list, led by the always super Chiwetel Ejiofor. But the last one-third of film bogs down in the usual suspense/thriller hokum. Instead of the usual battle-to-the-death-in-an-abandoned-factory scene, there is the switchback ending. The conclusion actually conceals a trapdoor, the improbability of which undercuts the previous 100 minutes. All in all like a really good made-for-TV movie. The scene of Nicole Kidman interrogating the villain is quite good.

Good story line. Enough action to keep your attention. Good cast giving good performances.....and a twist at the end.

Referring to the Hollywood version, it unfolds at a very slow pace. Can't call it a thriller, but a mystery flick alright. Julia Roberts did dwell. Bad casting for Nicole Kidman's role. She tried hard but the role just wasn't fitting in. Good story, but some side plots such as Mosque weren't convincing. Good for a lazy weekend.

The original Argentinian film is amazing!
The original is well-crafted, has a bit of dry humor, complex characters and relationships, and really interesting cinematography. Entertaining throughout, you may be laughing or you may be feeling their pain, but it never feels slow.

Don't bother with the remake!
(even though it has great actors like Chiwetel Ejiofor)
The remake feels really, really long and dark and dragging and a bit awkward and not as tightly-woven and sometimes feels forced plot-wise.

Disappointing movie! With such a cast, so much potential! Very sad, grey movie!

This movie is incredibly boring. It just does not take off. Don't waste your time. Such a shame, too with the talented cast. Another Hollywood remake that falls flat.

Talking about the remake with Ejiofor and Roberts:
Disturbing. A bit slow. Good acting but not paced well and too much jumping between time periods.

A real gem - and I'm talking about the 2009 Spanish original "THE Secret in Their Eyes".

Unfortunately the library has put all the reviews for both the original 2009 Spanish version and the 2015 Hollywood remake ("Secret in Their Eyes") together under the titles for both of the two movies. But they are NOT the same movie.

For starters, the Spanish original doesn't have mosques or terrorism (only Hollywood would feel the need to throw those in), nor does it have Nichole Kidman or Julia Roberts. What the Spanish original does have is finesse, cultural subtleties (that are no doubt completely lost in the Hollywood version), a most wondrous and almost magical word trick, and the aching pull of relationships so full of love you can feel it.

I can't vouch for the "remake" Hollywood version, but the Spanish original is excellent.

This is one of the better revenge flicks. Three agencies are brought together in an anti-terrorism unit. They become fast friends and romance blossoms between two of them, Ray and Clare. Then they get a tip about a dead girl's body outside a mosque with suspected terrorist ties. The girl has been brutally raped and her body bleached. She is the daughter of the third in their team, Jess. Several things happen to allow the killer to escape justice. The three part and it's obvious this has ruined their trio as well as Jess's life. Ray feels horrible because he promised Jess justice. Jess's daughter was almost like his and he was supposed to meet her that morning and didn't. Thirteen years go by and Ray comes across a piece of evidence that can nail the killer, so he returns and tries to engage Jess and Claire in helping him. That's when he learns the truth and it's a zinger. Loved the twist ending. You will too.

Ray: I always thought if this one was over, it would feel like it was over.
Jessica: Maybe it's been over a long time, we just never knew it.
Jessica: I don't think I have the stomach to watch him walk away again. Does that sound like justice to you? I hate the death penalty. Let him rot in jail, live a life full of nothing. ... Life sentence, Ray.
Ray: For you, too?
Ray: You were always beautiful, but so ambitious.
Claire: I prefer "determined."
Ray: Political.
Claire: Collegial.
Ray: Oblivious.
Claire: I think you like looking back more than I do. I don't have the time for it.
Ray: Okay. Let's look forward.
Claire: Okay, let's.

Jessica: Christ. An unrequited office romance. The cliché of it doesn't bother you?
Ray: Jess. Have a little respect. She's engaged.
Jessica: You know? This is...It's inappropriate. The beauty from Harvard Law and the blue-collar Fed from the wrong side of Brooklyn. So sad.
Ray: Don't be a dick, Jess.
Jessica: Thank you, Ray. A sexist would've called me something else.
Ray: Why? You're such a dick.
Siefert: Sorry, Cobb. Golden rule of counter-terrorism, remember? Protect the snitch.
Ray: You're both working for a liar.
Jessica: That's the trouble with you, Ray. You think that matters.

Jessica: I hate the death penalty.
Ray: Oh, yeah? Why's that?
Jessica: Death would be too good for this guy. A big meal and a shot and a nap. Let him rot in jail, live a life full of nothing.
Siefert: You really are a moron, Bumpy, you know that?
Bumpy: Siefert, you keep throwing that term around, but I'm not sure you know what it actually means. It's a medical term. Did you know that?
Siefert: Is that right?
- Mmm-hmm. It means someone with an IQ between 50 and 69. An imbecile's someone with an IQ between 49 and 20.
- And an idiot, I think is the word you're looking for.
- Someone who scores below 19.
- H mm. What do you call someone who's dumber than that?
- Lieutenant.
