It has been a very, very long while since I watched any of the Rocky movies. This DVD is about Apollo Creed’s son Adonis, who has been a fighter since his troubled childhood and wants to become a professional boxer like his old man. They have some Rocky/Creed flashbacks early on, but I don’t remember what happened to Apollo Creed (apparently, I need to watch Rocky IV again). Adonis seeks out Rocky for training. Rocky wants to put boxing behind him, but of course, everyone has something to fight for! I don’t love boxing and the final fight in this movie is very bloody, but you may want to watch the DVD since Creed II is to be released in November 2018. Or perhaps like me, you may need to watch all the Rocky movies again (there are 5!) since Creed II has Adonis Creed taking on Ivan Drago’s (remember Dolph Lindgren in the ring?) son in the ring.

Why make another Rocky sequel? Especially after Rocky Balboa gave the character a perfect send-off? Why make any movie - they had a story to tell, and thankfully it's a good one. As the title indicates, it isn't Rocky's story, and although he has a prominent role, he is never allowed to overshadow the actual protagonist, Adonis Creed, nee Johnson. This is Adonis' film from start to finish, but (unlike in some other franchises) the filmmakers seem to understand that their characters are complementary rather than competitors. While it has become cliche to attempt to deepen every goofy action movie by claiming that it is "about family" (these "families" are usually mere temporary agglomerations of adolescents), Creed really is about a family, a family wounded by sin and death. Indeed, it is remarkable the extent to which this film extends its understanding of family into the realm of the dead, with a number of characters (Apollo most notably, of course, but also Adrian, Paulie, and Adonis' unnamed mother) remaining present despite being gone. The result is an engaging, touching film that is the exact opposite of a cynical cash grab.

The characters. The chemistry. The realism. Good movie.

Our collective crush Michael B Jordan always brings it, as does Ryan Coogler. Since this is a Rocky movie there’s a bit of cheese involved, but it’s okay because it’s Rocky. The fight scenes are visceral. The music is on point. Tessa Thompson is everyone’s dream girl. Rocky has morphed into a kindly grandfather. There are just so many things to love about this movie.

I'm not a boxing fan, but this is as much about father-son relationships as it is about sport. Michael B Jordan is never less than magnetic, while Stallone reins in his tendency to overact enough to deserve his Oscar nomination. Supporting cast also excellent. Directed by Ryan Coogler, who also directed "Black Panther."

Directed by Ryan Coogler, this film takes on the story of Apollo Creed’s illegitimate son, Adonis, who is played by Michael B. Jordan. Leaving his comfortable house and secure job, Adonis travels to Philadelphia to get in touch with Rocky Balboa, played by Sylvester Stallone. After revealing himself to be Apollo’s son, he convinces Rocky to begin training him as a boxer for the world title. It is clear that this film’s protagonist is Adonis, and unlike the Rocky Balboa series, this movie shows Rocky as an aging trainer. The story is quite different from the Rocky series, and in spite of a few scenes that may create nostalgia, there are several different elements to Creed, such as new love interests. This gives Creed its own distinct feel, which is why it did well commercially. Apart from that, the film is also directed well and the acting is decent. That’s why I think Creed deserves 4 stars.

Creed is a movie about legacy and more importantly, the legacy of Apollo Creed. Apollo Creed was famous and well known for his skills as a boxer. His legacy ended but, a new legacy is waiting to be made as Apollo’s son, Adonis has got an interest in boxing. Adonis has had a tough childhood without his father, and has gotten into many fights just to survive, he hopes to use that to fuel his passion for boxing. Adonis will gladly train anywhere and anyhow if it means he can improve his skills as a boxer. As one legacy has ended, another is being forged in the shape of Adonis Creed who may one day exceed even his father. Creed was a fantastic movie, I really enjoyed the fighting, music, and the story. Although, there is some strong language and some violence, I would definitely recommend this movie and rate it 4/5 stars.

Great boxing movie and great continuation of the Rocky story. Apollo Creed was always my favorite character so it was great to see his story continue through his son.

As someone who is not much of a fan of the "Rocky" series (I know, heresy.), sports movies, or boxing, I was quiet surprised with how much I enjoyed "Creed." It's the 7th film in the long-running "Rocky" series, which seemed to be, pardon the pun, on the ropes. So I'll give credit to Sylvester Stallone, the guiding light of the series (Aside from starring, he has written, directed, and produced.), for taking it in a different direction. Michael B. Jordan stars as Adonis Creed, Apollo Creed's illegitimate son, who is trying to make it as a boxer without his father's name. Stallone agrees to train him. Tessa Thompson ("Dear White People") and Phylicia Rashad co-star. Jordan is great in the lead and Stallone is understated and actually very sweet as the aging Rocky. It did make me realize how few boxing movies have black protagonists, despite the fact that they dominate the sport. Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, whose previous film, "Fruitvale Station," also starred Jordan, who deserves to be a star.

From IMDb:

Rocky Balboa: Apollo? Yeah, he was great. Perfect fighter. Ain't nobody ever better.
Adonis Johnson: So how did you beat him?
Rocky Balboa: Time beat him. Time, you know, takes everybody out. It's undefeated.

Rocky Balboa: You can't learn anything when you're talking. That's a fact of life. As long as you're talking, you're not listening.
