Was Foster Beck the prototype for Harper Lee's Atticus Finch? Hard to tell reading this book. But it is clear that the defendant, like the fictional Tom Robinson, was innocent - and in this case, executed for a rape not only he did not commit but in fact a rape that never happened. Set in the Great Depression. this book is a window in the crooked justice system of the US South that was pervasive well into the 1960s. A frightening read when one considers that it could happen again if the wrong kind of political leadership were ever to take over and make fair trails a mockery again.
