For Gabaldon fans who are serious about her series of 8 Jamie and Claire novels, and the Lord John novellas and short stories, this second volume is probably a necessity. Her plot summaries are even more complete than I remember from Vol. 1 on the first 4, while skimpy on the Lord John novellas. She does give a helpful genealogy chart for his family. Some of the rest is an edited repeat from the first vol, sometimes expanded. Her explanation of the character of Black Jack Randall, and why she portrays him as she does, is more detailed, and more compelling, for instance. Gabaldon also gives info, including pictures, on the Starz version of the first book, which I haven't seen. I appreciated the floor plans of Lallybroch and the Big House at Fraser's Ridge, and wish they'd been in the novels. I'm waiting for the 9th Big Book, because "Written in my Own Heart's Blood" leaves virtually every major character hanging. And by now there are a slew of major characters!
