What should be a cozy and fun-filled weekend deep in the English countryside takes a sinister turn in Ruth Ware's suspenseful, compulsive, and darkly twisted psychological thriller.

Leonora, known to some as Lee and others as Nora, is a reclusive crime writer, unwilling to leave her nest of an apartment unless it is absolutely necessary. When a friend she hasn't seen or spoken to in years unexpectedly invites Nora ( Lee ? ) to a weekend away in an eerie glass house deep in the English countryside, she reluctantly agrees to make the trip. Forty-eight hours later, she wakes up in a hospital bed injured but alive, with the knowledge that someone is dead. Wondering not what happened but what have I done?, Nora ( Lee ? ) tries to piece together the events of the past weekend. Working to uncover secrets, reveal motives, and find answers, Nora ( Lee ? ) must revisit parts of herself that she would much rather leave buried where they belong: in the past.

In the tradition of Paula Hawkins's instant New York Times bestseller The Girl On the Train and S. J. Watson's riveting national sensation Before I Go To Sleep , this gripping literary debut from UK novelist Ruth Ware will leave you on the edge of your seat through the very last page.

An atmospheric and creepy thriller/mystery that is reminiscent of a locked room Agatha Christie story. The chapters alternate between flashbacks and present day as the protagonist lies in a hospital bed trying to remember what actually happened to her. Even though I thought that I had figured out... I thought it a bit boring and all the characters unlikeable.

Really enjoyed.

a bit superficial in terms of the narrative and complexity of the story, however, the tension is well managed, and that's ultimately what horror relies on. Not a powerful story, but it's competently crafted.

For me, I was expecting a mystery mixed with a little horror. I was envisioning friends getting together while a killer from one of the character's past comes to go after them.

What I ended up reading was a book about old grudges, miscommunication, unresolved teen angst, and a belief that once you return to your roots, you fall back into old patterns.

I would have preferred the mystery part be eliminated and the book been presented as a coming of age for a 20 something adult since I was more interested in that part of story then the 'mystery' part.

A quick, easy, read-in-one-afternoon kind of book. The plot was somewhat predictable, the characters bleh, and the writing clumsy, but I did finish it.

In a Dark, Dark Wood. A previous commentator cited the book as one for those born after 1986. Spot on. Unless, of course, this is a sublimely crafted caricature. Probably not. So, what we have here are the self-indulgent blathering and antics of Gen Y (a.k.a. Millennial) narcissists. Which makes the novel a rendering of animated degeneracy. Move along, nothing read worthy here.

Ruth Ware's best book so far. And it is her first.

When I got to the part where she was drinking tequila and snorting coke because her friends wanted her to, I was done. Who wants a main character that can't stand up for herself. I don't think this was Agatha Christie-like at all. Didn't finish it.
