Mitch Albom creates his most unforgettable fictional character--Frankie Presto, the greatest guitarist to ever walk the earth--in this magical novel about the bands we join in life and the power of talent to change our lives.

In his most stunning novel yet, the voice of Music narrates the tale of its most beloved disciple, young Frankie Presto, a war orphan raised by a blind music teacher in a small Spanish town. At nine years old, Frankie is sent to America in the bottom of a boat. His only possession is an old guitar and six precious strings.

But Frankie's talent is touched by the gods, and his amazing journey weaves him through the musical landscape of the 20th century, from classical to jazz to rock and roll, with his stunning talent affecting numerous stars along the way, including Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Carole King, Wynton Marsalis and even KISS.

Frankie becomes a pop star himself. He makes records. He is adored. But his gift is also his burden, as he realizes, through his music, he can actually affect people's futures--with one string turning blue whenever a life is altered.

At the height of his popularity, Frankie Presto vanishes. His legend grows. Only decades later, does he reappear--just before his spectacular death--to change one last life.

With its Forest Gump-like romp through the music world, The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto is a classic in the making. A lifelong musician himself, Mitch Albom delivers a remarkable novel, infused with the message that "everyone joins a band in this life" and those connections change us all.

It was truly enchanting and I found it to be like nothing that I’ve ever read.

Mitch Albom tells compelling stories. Loved how he entwined historical musicians into Frankie's life. Other books I've read, I've felt a more upbeat connections. Frankie, through bad luck or bad choices, never has a life I feel he had true happiness and contentment. Sad.

I did enjoy "Frankie Presto", by Mitch Albom, however, I also found it a very sad story. The ending did surprise me and I will not ruin the ending for future readers. I will say that I preferred Mr. Albom's book, "The Time Keeper", to this work. But that is a matter of opinion.

I would recommend this book to other readers.

Lots of people love this book, but the fairy tale aspect of the story did not resonate with me.

Frankie Presto is an accomplished musician, but with a sad, complicated, painful, yet beautiful, life story. And his story, appropriately enough, is narrated by the talent he embodies, Music. From his beginnings as an abandoned baby, to an orphan, to a guitar student, to an immigrant, to a musical success phenomenon (possibly better than Elvis!), the reader is swept away with tales of his life with preeminent musicians, to his battles with memories and addictions.
I loved this story and was constantly nudging minutes out of the day to read. I wasn't ready for it to end.
This was our book club choice for February - and served as a reminder why I love book club: this is a book I would never have read on my own, or voluntarily picked up to read. I was gloriously rewarded

I can't imagine there would be many people who would not love this book. It was a wonderful story full of nostalgia, history and culture. It has a fantastic cast of characters (many of whom you will already know) and it is filled with the best character true dialogue I have ever read. It is fun and touching and tender. If you are a lover of music you must pick this book up. You will love it. If you have been thinking about trying an audiobook, this is the one to start with. The audio production was fabulous.

In a book narrated by music, Frankie Presto’s amazing life is examined. An orphan, baby Frankie was found in a river by an unmarried man he came to believe was his father. Frankie was blessed with musical ability and this ability led him and his guitar from Franco’s Spain to the US where he worked with musicians like Duke Ellington, Elvis and other pop stars. Like all Mitch Albom books you feel better about the world after you’ve read the book.

As an amateur musician I really identified with the character in the book learning to play his instrument. You never stop learning. But the love stories were Kleenex reaching. I had a hard time putting the book down. A bit too big for an all-nighter but then you want to spread the pleasure over at least a few days.

As can be said of all of Albom's books, this one is a parable, with a hint of whatever it is that Albom does-- mysticism? spiritualist musing? para-religious what-ifs? Also, as with Albom's other books this is a love story and a tale about coping with adversity.
As narrator, Albom casts himself in the role of Music, a disembodied omniscient "talent" that infuses his protagonist, Frankie. And so, with the addition of a tiny bit of magic and a lot of (highly unlikely but convenient) serendipity he constructs a story. This book is about three times the length of his previous ones, covering the complete life of his protagonist: a stretched-out parable for sure, but still within the genre.
Thoroughly enjoyable!

Mitch Albom creates a fictional character who lives through the very influential time of music, from the classics through Elvis and Woodstock to a current country star. Frankie isn't perfect and he suffers some of the pitfalls that musicians often encounter, but he is a sympathetic protagonist. You learn about many historical composers and musicians as Frankie makes his way through the musical landscape.
