A follow-up to Hark! A Vagrant , which spent five months on the New York Times bestseller list

Ida B. Wells, the Black Prince, and Benito Ju#65533;rez burst off the pages of Step Aside, Pops: A Hark! A Vagrant Collection , armed with modern-sounding quips and amusingly on-point repartee . Kate Beaton's second D+Q book brings her hysterically funny gaze to bear on these and even more historical, literary, and contemporary figures. Irreverently funny and carefully researched, no target is safe from Beaton's incisive wit in these satirical strips.
Beaton began her infectiously popular web comic, Hark! A Vagrant, in 2007 and it quickly attracted the adoration of hundreds of thousands of fans. It was an unequivocal hit with critics and fans alike, topping best-of-the-year lists from E! , Amazon , Time , and more. Now Beaton returns with a refined pen, ready to make jokes at the expense of hunks, army generals, scientists, and Canadians in equal measure. With a few carefully placed lines, she captures the over-the-top evil of the straw feminists in the closet, the disgruntled dismay of Heathcliff, and Wonder Woman's all-conquering ennui. Step Aside, Pops is sure to be the comedic hit of the year: sharp, insightful, and very funny.

This is the best of current comic strips other than maybe "Megg, Mogg & Owl" stuff. The Vol. 1 "Hark! A Vagrant" was better but only because it has more Nancy Drew cover gags.

This collection is a continuation of Kate Beaton winning streak. Her comics are unapologetic in how smart and specific they are. Kate Beaton has skill and a unique talent of ensuring that her work stands apart from everyone else's.

Love, love, love Kate Beaton's work. So much of the story is in her ridiculous, flawed characters' expressions and body language. This midwestern American found some of the history obscure, especially regarding Canadian stuff, but in Beaton's deft storytelling hands, you don't need to be an insider to get the joke. While her history and literature comics feature predominantly, there's also the random David Bowie sighting. Just highly recommend.

This book made me laugh audibly, deep into the night. I was a fan of Beaton's first collection, Hark a Vagrant, which is just as good, but this time around I noticed how completely amazing she is at capturing facial expressions in what look like hastily scratched caricatures of famous literary and historical figures. Her work reminds me of the kind of sketches we made as kids of older siblings, parents, and teachers, which occasionally induced uncontrollable laughter due to remarkable accuracy, even in their roughness. If you like books, history, and laughing, you will adore this.

Its a very funny book in which I am going to return and check out many times. There isn't a comic in it that I didn't like.

I echo KateHillier's sentiments, absolutely loved this volume. One disappointment: too few "Wuthering Heights" strips! I hope that Kate Beaton will draw the complete novel someday!

Crude ink and half tone drawings, not very funny gags, but lots of literary references.

This collection of Kate Beaton's webcomic may be even funnier than the previous one. In this volume we meet Strong Female Characters, Napoleon insisting he's not that short, more Peasant comics, Gorey comics, and some wicked chivalry. It's all awesome and that's all there is to it.
