The hero of Everyman is obsessed with mortality. As he reminds himself at one point, "I'm thirty-four! Worry about oblivion when you're seventy-five." But he cannot help himself. He is the ex-husband in three marriages gone wrong. He is the father of two sons who detest him, despite a daughter who adores him. And as his health worsens, he is the envious brother of a much fitter man.

There are numerous insights and even good sage advice deftly interfused in the book. The narration is clear and good: fast when the phrase is better heard fast, slow when should be slow, the right words and phrases are emphasized just right.

The writing was great but the woe-as-me wailings of a womanizing manchild got really old – fast. I tossed the book aside not quite halfway through. If this main character is intended to relate to ‘everyman’ then I … [drags palms slowly down face] … I just don’t know. Suppose you could just leave the bottle then, Frank.

An unkind look at growing old and the accompanying afflictions is the major theme of this novel. The story unfolds through the eyes of a lonely, aging man struggling to find solace in the world he inadvertently created for himself through his actions and treatment of others during his lifetime. Though very well written the subject is rather depressing. At only 4 discs long, though, the story moves swiftly and does a good job at keeping your interest. The author, Philip Roth, has won many literary awards and been listed for the Nobel Prize for Literature.
