Canadian children's poet Dennis Lee (Alligator Pie), and Canadian children's author/artist Jeremy Tankard (Grumpy Bird) have teamed up to create a highly amusing collection of poems. Tankard's illustrations always complement the story within Lee's words by showcasing key characters, objects, and actions. His characteristic style, with its heavy inks, rounded lines, and contrasting colours nicely fits the whimsical nature of the subjects. Lee really delivers in this book by using some deliciously weird sounding words like "squoze" (the image makes it clear that a toddler thought this), by mixing things up with a variety of poetic styles, and by addressing subjects that children can relate to (ex. bathtime) or find amusement in (ex. Monkeydoodles). He also regularly refers to Canadian locations. Elvis the elf and Melvis the monster are the only reoccurring characters. They tie the book together with their book-reading adventure, and frame the collection with introductory and ending verses. Melvis and Elvis is a fun collection to read out loud with the little ones.

Great poems that bounce and skip across the page...
from Melvis & Elvis (Dennis Lee, 2015)
Open this book,
And you will see
A secret path
Called POETRY.

Follow the path,
And you will find
A home for your heart,
And a treat for your mind.
