Lying Out Loud is set in the world of Kody Keplinger's novel, The Duff. This story is about Sonny Ardmore who lies her way out of situations. Lying is her escape when she's late to class or when she doesn't have enough money to pay for lunch. Sonny and her best friend Amy Rush's archenemy is Ryder Cross, a new student who moved form Washington DC. They view Ryder as a complete snob who compares everything in their small town of Hamilton to his past home in Washington. Ryder has a major crush on Amy so one late night when Sonny picks up Amy's laptop to work on her homework while her best friend sleeps, Ryder messages her and the two chat and bond all night. She reveals that Ryder may not be the stuck up prick they thought. The only problem is that Ryder thinks that he's been talking to Amy this whole time--after all, Sonny was using Amy's account. Day by day, Ryder falls for "Amy" even more through the cyber world without knowing that it's actually her best friend behind the screen and Sonny starts falling for him too. Soon, she's got herself into a larger mess than she could ever imagine but can she lie her way out of this one?
