In order to get some solid French immersion, I've been checking out some French language books from the library. Beginner's stuff, nothing too complicated. Some people recommended checking out the famous story "Le Petit Prince", so I did just that.

When I picked this book up from the library, I thought "Oh, this looks like a simple, cute little children's book that I can fly through pretty fast." Fun! Well, if that's what your looking for this is probably not the book for you. It is a bit deeper than it appears to be on the surface, and often melancholy.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I didn't expect to be so profoundly affected by this story. That's not a bad thing though.

The story concerns a pilot who crashes his plane in the middle of the desert. There, he comes upon a little boy who claims to be from another planet, which is really a small asteroid. The boy recounts tales of his journey to earth that often involve encounters with strange, narrow-minded adult-folk.

After going over the passages until I felt I had a good understanding of the French, I found that there is a lot of food for thought among these chapters. I think that this is a book that will stay in the back of my mind for a while.

If you haven't read this story, I recommend it. It is the third most translated book in the world, so you don't have to read it in French if you don't want to.

When I was in elementary school my class analysed this book to the point of alienation; however, when I was looking for an easy French read many years later I decided to try it again. To my surprise Le Petit Prince is an incredibly relatable tale, filled with fantastic stories, and actually quite short. If you ever had trouble reading it in school, definitely give it another try.

This book is moves me to laughter and tears every single time I read it. This is one which should not be judged by it's childish cover.
