Add a CommentThis was the first book I completed in 2018 and I definitely connected with it on a personal level. Matt recently loses his mother and in his own way of dealing with his grief, wears a black suit. This book discusses grief, the way in which our lives change during times of loss, and the way in which people can find ways to cope. The romance is pretty tender in this one, and it sports Jason Reynolds' signature lyrical prose. Definitely a book I found myself easily relating to.
The Boy in the Black Suit is included in Hollywood News Source's 10 YA Books To Read For Mental Health Awareness Month -http://hollywoodnewssource.com/10-ya-books-to-read-for-mental-health-awareness-month/#.WAU_pPkrLGg
Matthew lost his mother to cancer and his father is in the hospital. He gets a job at the local funeral home, meets Lovey, a girl he likes. Through their honesty they discover they share an experience of a fateful night
A moving meditation on loss and mourning. A quiet character study. A slice of life.
Matt is trying to figure out how to move forward after the loss of his mother to cancer. High school no longer feels relevant and his Brooklyn neighborhood both grounds and nettles him. He stumbles into a job at a local funeral parlor, where he unexpectedly finds solace, a mentor, and a love interest. Gradually Matt works through his grief and figures out how to begin healing.
Realistic, tangible, and nuanced, this vividly captures lived experience.
I enjoyed seeing Matthew come to terms with the grief of losing his mother and moving on. Good story!!
Powerful story of how a teen deals with grief after his mother dies of cancer and his father returns to alcoholism.
Wearing a black suit to high school every day can get you some strange looks, but Matthew lets his classmates stare. His mom passed away a couple months back, but his real reason for being decked out his new job at the same funeral home where his mother’s service was held. That might seem weird, but it pays well and sure beats working in fast food. Matthew’s new job brings a sense of comfort and family that he thought was lost.
After his mother dies, seventeen-year old Matt thinks he will never cook again-until he meets Lovey while working at his funeral home job.
Includes a yummy recipe for Chocolate Chip Cookies!
