Ian McAllister, conservationist, photographer, and longtime Great Bear Rainforest resident, takes us on a deeply personal journey from the headwaters of the region's unexplored river valleys down to the hidden depths of the offshore world. Globally renowned for its astonishing biodiversity, the Great Bear Rainforest is also one of the most endangered landscapes on the planet, where First Nations people fight for their way of life as massive energy projects threaten entire ecosystems.

This stunning collection of photographs and personal narrative is the product of twentyfive years of McAllister's research, exploration, and campaigning for the spectacular area he calls home.

McAlliser is an amazing photographer and his photographs enrich this book. He is also an excellent writer. His descriptions made me see in vivid detail what he was writing about. Over the years he has become more and more a conservationist, ecologist and environmentalist. The book is divided into sections that showcase the different lifeforms in this part of the world, from salmon to starfish to sea wolves to Kermode bears (spirit bears, white black bears) to old growth forests to the First Nations people who live there to whales and sea lions … This book is worth looking at for the photos alone, but it is also worth it for the stories he tells in it.
