Despite the popularity of abstract art, painters don't always know how to connect emotionally with this style. Through inspirational projects and exercises, Laura Reiter explains how to create that expressive connection. She examines the creative process, including themes, composition, materials, and mixing media. The result: increased skills and awareness of how to deliver adventurously abstract works that burst with texture, detail, and color.

This is a book I am certain I will return to for its clear explanations about techniques, process, and materials as well as the why and how of making abstract art. The color illustrations are excellent and motivating. Reiter also provides concise and well illustrated definitions of design principles. The projects she proposes for practicing the concepts provide a useful platform for experimentation.
