Having grown up in and around Palo Alto, I was intrigued by the title and, frankly, some of the characters do remind me of some of my more unsavory classmates. For this reason, I may be biased against this movie. The characters are sort of cardboard cut-outs of the bad boys, sluts, trash-talkers, and then there is sweet, innocent April (Emma Roberts). She has but one vice. She smokes. Apparently, the story is drawn from James Franco's 'Palo Alto Stories.' He stars in the movie as the soccer coach who goes after sweet April. I'm fine with that as a plot device, but I couldn't help but think about how Franco is one, of many, getting accused of sexual misconduct in real life lately. The very accusations are that he pursued under-aged girls. I want to think that he was merely studying up for this role. I like Franco and he does a good job in the film as do all players. I hope that the accusations are untrue or at least highly exaggerated. Gia Coppola, like her sister Sophia, has revealed herself as a very competent director. Both sisters seem drawn to disaffected youth. Both make films that are beautifully shot. I would say they each have bright futures in the business.

Jack Kilmer is a revelation. He shines in this film. Kudos to Gia Coppola and James Franco.

I watched this to get a sense of what happens in Palo Alto. Well, everyone is dysfunctional in this film by a Coppola grandchild. The kids smoke, inhale, drink, purge and engage in non-stop risky behavior. The adults are zoned out, self-involved or preying on the kids. There are two sympathetic characters, Teddy and April, and their stories make the film worth watching. But it's not a pretty picture. I'm leaving for Palo Alto on Friday; it makes want to cancel my trip.

Dark, depressing, and not providing a way out

I'd recommend this movie to 16-20 year olds as it deals with issues related to this stage of development such as socialization and teenage angst.

I must be an outlier, because I liked this movie. It reminded me of Dazed and Confused.

Not bad, but nothing special either. Doesn't really add anything that hasn't been done before.

Pointless. Not worth watching all the way through. No subtitles, either.

Emma Roberts is surprisingly good in this movie; it's the other actors that are unremarkable, or even watchable. I wasn't really an Emma Roberts fan, but this film shows that she has some real potential, if she gets the right roles. James Franco... plays James Franco, basically. I'm not sure why he's a star or people take him seriously. The film itself is very dull and dry.

Boring. Awful. Awfully boring!
