Another companion to the selection series. It is told in Aspen’s point of view. He shares his feelings towards Maxon and America’s relationship, as well as his and America’s relationship before she got chosen and had to leave to participate for the selection. It gives an insight about what it is like to be in a lower caste, such as a six and some of the traumatic things that he and his family have gone through. It is perfect for fans of the Selection series who are Team Aspen.

The Guard is another one of Cass’s novellas and accompaniments to her ever popular Selection series. As with her others, this short story covers a character's perspective that is contrasted when in comparison to America Singer’s story but the character will have some important factor in the story. The Guard follows Aspen Leger, a guard in the royal palace who struggles to find where he lies in the hearts of others and where his heart lies itself. The love of his life was snatched away from him through the Selection, but now he is right there with her in the palace. Honestly speaking, this really got me loving Aspen because he was so desperate, so cared about America until the end because he still loved her. It had me imagining what it would be like if a person I loved so much was forced to be a part of the game called the Selection, and to see that person fall in love with someone else. Absolutely amazing and I recommend!

Disappointing, I read this after I read "the One" was hoping it was his story right up till the end of "the One" it doesn't, leaving me with unanswered questions.
