I was lost in the reading. It jumped too rapidly between three characters. It was hard to understand, but the story was good. I just wish it was told through the perspective of ONE person.

A different YA experience than I'm used to I did enjoy the concept of the book, the historical inspirations and the social issues addressed, such as human trafficking. But the execution was lacking. 3 likable yet still vague characters had almost similar voices. The two sisters were sometimes so indistinguishable that I forgot whose segment I was reading. Also it was just too long, with minor happenings being shown from multiple points of view got tiring. It also would have been nice to have more cultural substance beyond the place names, character names and endless references to dragons. But for it's length which would deter most last minute school report kids, I would recommend this to students as a possible realistic fiction option.

Such a great read! There's mystery, some thriller elements, and three stories that twine together, along with birth families and the families we make for ourselves. I am a SUCKER for families we make for ourselves. I am also a sucker for trusty cat friends in books, so I loved Chma. And the girls in this book, oh man. They're so brave and smart and real they practically leap off the pages. I'm so here for nuanced depictions of teenage girls.

Great dystopian-like setting drawn from reality. Great tension and adrenaline. Excellent themes. Decent characters and voice.

So much smoke wisps up from the Brotherhood’s pipes and cigarettes that soon enough I can’t even see Nuo clearly. I only know she’s there because of her music. Despite her bandaged finger, the notes stab through the air, steady and strong.
And despite the hurt in my legs, I walk straight, keep a smile pasted to my face.
We’re stronger than they think.

It never made sense to my young mind, how a hurt from so long ago could keep a man from walking right. Stay with him the rest of his life. But now that I'm older, now that I've fought my own wars and fired my own guns, I understand. There's a hurt in my heart, like the flee of an old war wound. An ache I can't really explain. An ache that won't let me forget.
