Most of Perry's books are heavy on filler: Was this why it happened? Or was that why it happened? Such questions as those comprise, I'd guess, 50% of each page. If the books were shortened to just what was plot, leaving out the repeated speculations, I'd enjoy them more. I like the characters who appear book after book, and that they grow and work on themselves and become better people. I like that Perry has them think about things on several levels at once, as we all do. I like that she has them sometimes be consumed by petty concerns and sometimes by noble ones, and often by quotidian matters, as is true for us all.

I quite enjoyed this book although it seemed to drag at times and it was hard to keep all the characters straight. Surprise ending.

Particularly enjoyed this title in the Monk series. Set against a well researched historically accurate background. Very atmospheric in her writings of the Victorian period. I always look forward to reading the next one in this & the Thomas Pitt series.

I'm pleased to have read Anne Perry's latest in the Monk series. The background to the sinking of a pleasure boat on the Thames made for a very interesting case with the usual cover-ups at the highest political level.I enjoy the series characters.
