Hamish McBeth is at it again, trying to solve murders in spite of the interference, ambition, self-regard, and resistance of his supervisors and the people around him. As usual, he is ordered off the case numerous times and yet, by thought, following his instincts and ignoring orders, he manages to figure it out. But a lot of people die, he is hopeful and then disappointed in love, while all around him pursue their own self-interests.
It starts with a miserable young woman who feels herself superior to basically everyone in Scotland. She reports to Hamish that her drink was drugged in a local bar, her sketchbook was stolen, and she was raped. He begins to investigate, plans to have her hypnotized and then she is murdered, just one of many not very smooth or well-planned murders. All the usual characters appear in the story, but he does figure it all out, remaining unhappily single, due to the machinations of the lazy officer he works with.
