Though a collection of short stories, each one is really a stand-alone mini-novel, full of detail and depth about ordinary people coping with the common pressures of family and marriage, and those moments that change everything. It was as if I'd grown up with so many of these people and I could profoundly empathize with their circumstances.

If you like Alice Munro, try Edith Pearlman. Her stories are among the best I've ever read.
