From #1 New York Times bestselling author Harlan Coben, a heart-pounding thriller about the ties we have to our past...and the lies that bind us together

It's a profile, like all the others on the online dating site. But as NYPD detective Kat Donovan focuses on the accompanying picture, she feels her whole world explode as emotions she's ignored for decades come crashing down on her. Staring back at her is her ex-fiance, Jeff, the man who shattered her heart--and whom she hasn't seen in eighteen years.

Kat feels a spark, wondering if this might be the moment when past tragedies recede and a new world opens up to her. But when she reaches out to the man in the profile, her reawakened hope quickly darkens into suspicion and then terror as an unspeakable conspiracy comes to light in which monsters prey upon the most vulnerable.

As the body count mounts and Kat's hope for a second chance with Jeff grows more and more elusive, she is consumed by an investigation that challenges her feelings about everyone she's ever loved--her former fiance, her mother, and even her father, whose cruel murder so long ago has never been fully explained. With lives on the line, including her own, Kat must venture deeper into the darkness than she ever has before and discover if she has the strength to survive what she finds there.

An enjoyable read, but Harlen Coben probably didn't put his heart and soul into this particular "thriller."

Some bits of dialog are snarky and fun.

But, the love interest isn't particularly credible. The back stories trip all over each other. Tediously so.

And too many of the many, many characters are paper-thin clones.

Enjoyed listening to the book on CD! The secerts stayed out of sight until the end of the book. The book was well written. The person that was the reader did the change of voices quite well. The plot keeps you on the edge of your seat.

I have read almost all of Harlan Coben's other books. He is one of my favourite authors. However, this book (unlike the others) was very hard to get into, very difficult to penetrate and sustain continuing interest in.

I like this author so much that I am going to give it another try, though.

His other books are very enjoyable, all set in the same locale and with characters that recur and have cameos in both his series and his standalone novels. His writing style is humorous and winsome. There is usually a lot of action and a fair bit of violence. His main characters think with their hearts and rush in to do the honourable thing (never the logical or expedient thing) and so often find themselves battered and bruised, both physically and emotionally.

This is the first book I have listen to by Harlan Coben. It was slow in the beginning but once I got past that the story line is very good. keeps you hanging on about the bad guys till almost the end as to what they are up too. Ending up being a very good book.

Disappointed in the latest effort by an otherwise excellent author. Feminine voice didn't sound "real". Dark and humorless.

Well written and well read. This is the first Harlen Coben novel that I read (listened to) and I will read more.

There are several story plots rolled into two by the end. As a result, the novel is unnecessarily long to the point of remindful of a chick flick movie. There, I wrote it. 4 of 10 stars
