A New York Times Bestselling AuthorA Pulitzer Prize-winning AuthorLayton Carlson Jr. of Red Wing, Minnesota, had picked the perfect spot to lose his virginity to his girlfriend: an abandoned farmyard in the middle of cornfields. The only problem was something smelled bad -- like, really bad. When he mentioned it to a county deputy, the cop found a body stuffed down a cistern. And then another, and another. By the time Lucas Davenport was called in, they were up to fifteen bodies and counting.

A really good one. Lucas Davenport at his best; the guy who scores in overtime after seemingly doing little during the first three periods of the hockey game. A young couple are "parking" out in the corn fields in rural Minnesota one summer evening when they smell something foul. It turns out that the abandoned cistern nearby is full of bodies of women who disappeared over the past two decades. Horrible. This is a case for BCA but Lucas doesn't take the lead; he'd sooner, "talk to a few people, if I come across any that are interesting." And he does. Most enjoyable watching Lucas' daughter Letty take an interest in her father's occupation and how he uses common sense to catch the killer. All in all, one of the best I have ever read.

Davenport #24. A teen uncovers a field that has been used for years by an unsuspected serial killer as a place to leave his corpses.

Hard to believe anyone could get away with killing 15+ people until you look at the statistics, Sanford knows his material as there are several thousand unsolved disappearances each year most are women. Says a lot about our society.

Gruesome enough but.... not as flip and smart as the last one I read. The dialogue is off so I hope John Sandford has upped his game to his expected high standard for the new one, Extreme Prey due out shortly.

Agree, the dialogue is not as vivid as the other Prey books. I'm not looking forward to the next Prey book if it is like this one.

Excellent read, excellent ending, but I agree with commenter, myscoot, something about the dialogue was a litte off in this book; maybe forced?

I have read all the "Prey novels" and so far this is the best!

The series is a fun read.

Very enjoyable. Never read a Sandford novel I didn't like, and always look forward to the next.
