Born in Victoria, British Columbia (1871) - Emily Carr was a painter and writer who, along with Tom Thomson, the Group of Seven, and David Milne, was one of the preeminent, and perhaps most original, Canadian painters of the first half of the twentieth century.

Carr was also one of the only major female artists in either North America or Europe of that period. In Carr’s mature paintings, nature is a furious vortex of organic growth depicted with curving shapes that create the impression of constant movement and transformation.

As one of the first painters in Canada to adopt a Modernist and Post-Impressionist painting style - Carr did not receive widespread recognition for her work until late in her life. As she matured, the subject matter of her painting shifted from aboriginal themes to landscapes, particularly, forest scenes.

*Note* - In 1945 - Emily Carr died at the age of 73.
