When a white servant girl violates the order of plantation society, she unleashes a tragedy that exposes the worst and best in the people she has come to call her family.Orphaned while onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the master's illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin.Eventually, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, where the master is absent and the mistress battles opium addiction. Lavinia finds herself perilously straddling two very different worlds. When she is forced to make a choice, loyalties are brought into question, dangerous truths are laid bare, and lives are put at risk. The Kitchen House is a tragic story of page-turning suspense, exploring the meaning of family, where love and loyalty prevail.

Readers were excellent!! I must have found this book to be absorbing because I caught myself worrying about the characters at times when I wasn't listening! It is depressing, however.

Absolutely loved this audio book. I only listened in the car and would often find myself sitting in the car because I just couldn't wait to hear what happened next. The reader was excellent at drawing me into this book and sounded the characters. I felt like I personally knew every one. One review I read hated the book because she said it was full of despair and no hope. I disagree. While the book had some heart-wrenching scenes, I felt it was more a picture of things that may have truly happened. Now that I have finished the book, I must catch my breath before I can even think about getting so emotionally involved in another one.

This is one of those GREAT recordings that adds to an already fantastic book.

WOW! Although I'm now exhausted by the emotional rollercoaster, still, wow.

Read this for my book club. Good book, especially for discussion. I listened to the audio book which alternated between two different readers, depending on which character was telling her account of the story.

Great book! So well narrated, I felt like the characters came to life. Keep reading or listening, the second half is even better. This is a keeper.
