I read lots of poetry, especially Canadian poetry, and I am so glad I found this book, as it is something I have been missing in my reading experience. I have read a few books by Dionne Brand, but never before a comprehensive anthology of Canadian black writers. I highly recommend it!

Good stuff! I will now look for publications of short (preferably very short) stories of similar themes.

The Great Black North is a book that is unlike its kind. In the past, there have been books compiling the tales of the African Americans who had suffered through slavery. However, this book illustrates the lives of African Canadians. The book concentrates on poetry ranging from the 19th to 20th century. Contrasting the Confederate States of America, Canada did not favour the treatment that African Americans had received, but there was a lingering feeling of racism around the provinces. This book perfectly perceives what it was like to be an African Canadian and historically pieces together events that might not be of common knowledge. It sheds light to the Canada’s dark past and therefore the book is a must-read. Even if the reader only reads certain poems, the thought of the hardships that were endured are painted in the readers’ minds.
