Every August, four women would gather together to spend a week at the beach, renting a new house each year. The ritual began when they were in their twenties and their husbands were in medical school, and became a mainstay of every summer thereafter. Their only criteria was oceanfront and isolation, their only desire to strengthen their far-flung friendships. They called themselves the Girls of August. But when one of the Girls dies tragically, the group slowly drifts apart and their vacations together are brought to a halt. Years later, a new marriage reunites them and they decide to come together once again on a remote barrier island off the South Carolina coast. There, far from civilization, the women make startling discoveries that will change them in ways they never expected.

A bit slim in terms of character development and plot, but great if you want something to read by the pool.

Kinda boring, not much of a plot. A couple of characters are grown up mean girls. Depressing to think the sisterhood is so catty even in their 50's. :)

I would classify this as "a beach read" - one that could be put down, or interrupted without too much concern. A fluffy tale that is rather forgettable.

Unlike previous reviewers, I really enjoyed this book and relished the fact that it was just over 200 pages. I've never read any of this author's books before, but I will be looking for more. Kept me interested all throughout. While the characters are a bit predictable, it was done in a way that kept me reading and just enjoying the writing style.

what a colossal waste of time and paper. if I were on the island with this bunch of "girls" for even one day, I'd be swimming back to the mainland rather than wait for a boat to pick me up

Disappointing. Very predictable from beginning to end. Not up to her usual standard. Glad I didn't buy this one. Don't waste your time.

I just finished this book and wished I was one of the Girls of August

After waiting a year for this book to come out, very disappointed. Only 220 pages, and nothing like some of her great books from earlier years. I've read all her books, and this was her worst!
