Charlotte Jane was born to a land locked pirate couple. She is an extraordinary little pirate girl. And she has lots of oomph. But she has decided that bedtime is not a juicy activity. She would much rather do other things like swashbuckling and treasure hunts. So she stays up later and later until one day she doesn't go to bed at all. The problem is, she no longer has oomph and cannot do the activities she so loves. Her parents try to help her find her oomph, but they are not successful. Charlotte Jane finally finds it in here feather bed after a nice full sleep.

ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations were created in watercolor. They are absolutely adorable and creative from the very first page. I love the details such as the treasure chest cradle, the house shaped as a ship, and all the Piratey details. The pictures are colorful and fun.

THE GOOD: I absolutely loved this book. These pirate parents showed so much love for their spirited little girl. The pirate elements tickled me pink( I do love a good pirate picture book). And of course this story shows what happens when little girls (even the hearty pirate children) don't go to bed when they should. I highly recommend this story!
THE DIFFICULT: There are quite a few big words this book that will need to be explained to the younger crowd such as hearty, formidable, and en garde.
NOTE: There is a lot of sword play
AGE RECOMMENDATION: Advertised for ages 4-8 which is a good age range. I don't know that I would recommend this necessarily as a bedtime story because of the high energy in the story.

A fun read, my son loves this book and I can't wait to read it to my daughter (who will be arriving any day now!).

Charlotte Jane, like her parents, is a pirate through and through. And she's not happy with this whole "bedtime" idea, so she decides she just won't. After all, it keeps her from doing all the fun stuff! But will the fun stuff be as fun without any sleep? Monescillo's art is so rich, I loved looking at it. One of our fave kids' books about pirates. And bedtime. And awesome girls!
