Edgar® Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author C.J. Box delivers a thriller about a troubled cop trying to save his son from a killer in Yellowstone.

Cody Hoyt, while a brilliant cop, is an alcoholic struggling with two months of sobriety when his mentor and AA sponsor Hank Winters is found burned to death in a remote mountain cabin. At first it looks like the suicide of a man who's fallen off the wagon, but Cody knows Hank better than that. Sober for fourteen years, Hank took pride in his hard-won sobriety and never hesitated to drop whatever he was doing to talk Cody off a ledge. When Cody takes a closer look at the scene of his friend'sdeath, it becomes apparent that foul play is at hand. After years of bad behavior with his department, he's in no position to be investigating a homicide, but this man was a friend and Cody's determined to find his killer.

When clues found at the scene link the murderer to an outfitter leading tourists on a multi-day wilderness horseback trip into the remote corners of Yellowstone National Park--a pack trip that includes his son Justin--Cody is desperate to get on their trail and stop the killer before the group heads into the wild. Among the tourists is fourteen-year-old Gracie Sullivan, an awkward but intelligent loner who begins to suspect that someone in their party is dangerous.

In a fatal cat and mouse game, where it becomes apparent the murderer is somehow aware of Cody's every move, Cody treks into the wilderness to stop a killer hell bent on ruining the only thing in his life he cares about.

"This is the third stand-alone mystery from Box, author of the excellent Joe Pickett series, and fans know they can expect lean prose and a tightly organized plot. Box delivers both in what is surely his best novel so far."

Excellent book/series This is the first book in the Cody Hoyt series. I thought the first couple of chapters were a little slow, but then it took off. There were good twists in the storyline, and I liked the characters, and story. The description of Yellowstone was wonderfully done, and the statement of how dangerous, and savage the wilderness can be is a hard truth. I look forward to reading the rest of CJ Boxes books.

I am a huge CJ Box fan. Love Joe Pickett and all his adventures. I have Josh Lucas casted as Joe should Mr. Box decide to make any of his novel into a screen play.
Sadly, this novel was NOT my favorite. I was either angry or sad for Cody, the main character. And I got fed up with the teenage girls. Too predictable for me.
Presently reading Long Range, newest Joe Pickett novel and it is VERY good!
Sorry, Mr Box. This character Cody needs some work.

Even though this is not a Joe Pickett novel, it is by far my favorite C.J. Box novel. The action is there right from the start, with about as much excitement as you can handle. Also love the character development, and the description of the scenery puts you right there! Brilliant writer.

This book is interesting right from the first sentence. I loved the Yellowstone setting. Author used enough description that allowed me to visualize the landscape, but not so much that I was skipping it.

-**-. Wow! What a great story. .-**- I don't want to say more because I don't want to spoil this wonderful book. At one point, late at night, I felt goosebumps rise. I wanted to wake my wife up to pull me out of what I was feeling. The only other time I actually did this was staying up all night to read THE SHINING long ago. This book has its own echo of sheer of terror. Well done C.J.

This is a very good read even if you don't like Cody Hoyt. This time he is out looking for his son who is on an adventure, Many twists and turns. I enjoyed this book.

C J Box is THE scribe of the current crop of murder mystery writers, where his contemporaries have all largely flamed out, Box continues to deliver one solid sender after another. This may be his most ambitious novel yet and kept me guessing to the LAST page! Really! There is no differentiating Joe Pickett stories from his "one-offs", all of his books satisfy, though maybe the "free standing" stories offer more latitude for trying out new ideas. I'll keep reading his every new work until the cows come home and I hope they're all WAY out on the North 40!
