December 1944. Soviet and German troops fight from house to house in the corpse-strewn suburbs of Budapest. Hungarian fascists join with die-hard Nazis to slaughter Jews. In less than six months, thirty-eight-year-old SS Colonel Adolf Eichmann has sent over half a million Hungarians to the gas chambers in Auschwitz. All that prevents him from liquidating Europe's last Jewish ghetto is an unarmed Swedish diplomatic envoy named Raoul Wallenberg. Wallenberg did what no other individual or nation managed to do: He saved more than 100,000 Jewish men, women, and children from extermination. Book jacket.

This is a "MUST READ"! I could not put it down. The author leads you on a factual journey that is alarming. I encourage everyone to read this book if you have the slightest bit of interest in WWII.

Excellent book about Raoul Wallenberg's incredible mission to save the last Jewish community left in Nazi Europe. He saved 100,000 Jews! Why doesn't everybody know about him? Several characters to follow so try to read on consecutive days. Wallenberg was steadfast in his rescue mission despite facing great danger. The last days of Budapest were horrific. The local Nazis made the German ones look reasonable...

Kershaw creates a diary of the destruction of the Hungarian Jews, the killers, the creators of the Final Solution to the Jewish Question, the victims & survivors, the few who attempted to save the Jews, those who did nothing.

NKVD interrogator of Wallenberg's associates:
Q:Who is he? Why is he here?
A: he came to save Jews.
Q: Lies! He was a spy for the Germans! Do you think anyone would stay here under siege for "humanitarian reasons" when they could have stayed in thier nice peaceful, neutral country?
