The movie was entertaining but to say it is 'based on a true story' stretches my credulibility. Jason Statham has done very well for himself given his small stature, bald head, and continuous three-day-shadow. This is a British film and it shows in their entire plotting. Some of thehe bad guys are criminal, some are in the police department, and some in the government. Breaking into the secure vault of a bank never was so easy as we see here. The robbery takes place in 1971. According to Wikipedia there were approximately 750 banks within 10 miles of Rowlands' receiver, including the Baker Street bank. The police reportedly checked every one of them based on an alert presented to them by a single ham radio operator who lived in the immediate area. At 1am, Rowlands contacted Scotland Yard, who immediately sent officers to his flat in Wimpole Street. At 2am, a senior police officer alerted radio detector vans to track down the gang's exact location. At the time, the thieves were still in the vaults but the police failed to realise this because the security door was still locked. The thieves got away with £1.5m cash (equivalent to £19.5 million in 2016) and valuables from over 260 safe deposit boxes.[5] The total haul was believed to be near £3m (2016: £38.9m).

I get that I am not the natural audience for this film. I watched it because it has around twenty different names and faces that I recognize, among them David Suchet and Daniel Mays. It was written by two men who are old school television writers from the early 70s. So it was interesting as an artifact.

Loaded with misogyny and some nasty, sadistic violence. Not for the sensitive or enlightened, or lovers of good drama. Not even good as a heist film. For that see Sexy Beast.

Very enjoyable fact-based politically-motivated heist-flick, however romanticized the truth may have been. Princess Margaret you naughty rascal you...

I expected this to be terrible, but it was actually pretty well done. I was sufficiently intrigued to look into the fascinating true story that it is based upon. One thing that drove me nuts is that the robbers in the film left their fingerprints all over the vault -- duh!

Watchable (Fair) - Bank Job, The (2008) **½ 111 min. starring Jason Stratham – Well-meaning bank heist film never really takes off. The story is based on the true to life Baker Street bank robbery of 1971. Terry Leather (Jason Stratham) is called to lead a team in an intricate bank robbery focusing on the safety deposit boxes, where unbeknownst to him, dirty secrets about the royal family lie. The film is ho-hum for most of the way until the last 20 minutes when the action gets going. The problem with this film is that though the characters were based on real people, not many of them had any real personality either.
