A soft gentle story in the beginning. The writing was lovely & I want to read more of Robert Goolrick. Charlie Beale arrives in a small peaceful town that he believes he could be content to settle down in, warm & good people all around him. Then he falls in love. It's then that it goes awry.
i dont really like this book much, too much repetitions, robert rodrick is an amaizin author reliable wife was the best..
Well written, loved the story and was sorry when it ended.
This writer could do no wrong as his story telling ability was phenomenal.
A very engaging novel, interesting characters in an isolated setting.
Charlie Beale is the mysterious stranger who comes to a small Virginia town in 1948 with only two suitcases, one unknown to any but us readers that is full of money. So begins a remarkable love story?Charlie?s love of a married woman named Sylvan and, just as remarkable, his love of his employer?s small son Sam.
You?ll love all the characters that inhabit this small town, its microcosm of small town life, both good and bad, and its viewpoint of this time of change in America. I?ll just say it now. I hope this book is nominated for the Pulitzer prize. It?s that good.
Not nearly as good as "A Reliable Wife"...but pretty good.
Could not wait to get back to it if I had to put it down. Suspenseful, powerful, shocking, romantic; I savoured it. One of those rare books that you fall into the time and place and don't want to leave. Goolrick is on my author watch list. A Reliable Wife was my favourite novel of that year, and this one is my fave for 2012. He's a masterful writer.
the best novel ever. a real page turner. i did not want it to end.
